Talking To Seniors About Giving Up Their Cars.

As time progresses and an individual begins to age, there will be an unenviable moment when they realize that due to limitations on their physical and mental acuity, they will not be able to drive. Of course, this situation can become even more complicated if the individual in question is still convinced they can drive, leaving doctors, friends, and family members in the precarious position of having to break the news to them. However, talking to seniors about giving up their cars and dangerous driving doesn’t have to be awkward or difficult. With some conscientious planning, reasoned arguments, and emotional sensitivity, you can convince the senior citizen in your life to prioritize both their safety and the safety of other motorists and pedestrians by relinquishing their cars.

How To Plan Talking To Seniors About Giving Up Their Cars

Talking to seniors about giving up their cars may not be the easiest or most pleasant conversation you will have, so it makes sense to plan before having the discussion. First, it should be decided who will be the one to initiate the discussion. Usually, spouses, adult children, and doctors are good choices, as they are close to the individual in question and have their best interests at heart. It’s also advisable to choose an opportune time to have this discussion- when the individual in question is calm and relaxed, such as following a nice meal.

You should broach the topic softly and perhaps in stages. Ask questions like, “Have you noticed anything different about your driving lately, ” or “How do you feel when you’re behind the wheel?” Depending on their reaction to these questions and the topic in general, you may have to disengage and try again at a later date to not upset your loved one.

Present Logical Reasons

Presenting a reasoned and logical argument when talking to seniors about giving up their cars is an essential part of the discussion. Explain to them that decreased driving ability is normal as one ages. Highlight that physical deterioration in reflexes and vision due to age or health conditions, as well as changes to sleep and medications, amounts to dangerous driving, which not only endangers them but innocent bystanders.

Having a doctor support your assertions will help bolster your arguments. It may also be prudent to have a medical referral for a government-sanctioned driving test to help objectively assess and prove any decline in driving ability the senior in your life may be experiencing.

Be Sensitive & Supportive

It’s important to let the seniors in your life know that the reason you’re having this conversation with them is out of love and concern for their well-being. Avoid harsh words, judgments, or ultimatums concerning their driving and stick to the facts, albeit presented in an encouraging and supportive way. You can also offer constructive solutions to their driving situation, such as driving during slow hours, only for a certain radius, or researching community-assisted driving programs for seniors.
