The Safety Dangers Of Abandoned Junk Cars

The question of how to dispose of your automobile is becoming increasingly popular. Due to indecisiveness or sheer laziness, storing it in the garage evolves from a temporary solution to a long-term habit for most people.  Others have the wherewithal to sell their scrap or non-functioning cars to scrap car removal companies like Auto-Scrap for a quick and tidy sum. Alarmingly, many people simply abandon their cars, opening up a Pandora’s box of hazards on city streets and suburban roads. The safety dangers of abandoned junk cars are serious, and motorists need to be encouraged to do the right thing and dispose of their old vehicles safely and responsibly.

Space, Habitat and Health

Abandoning a car on the side of a dirt road or leaving it parked somewhere in the urban jungle creates a dilemma for city officials, who need to spend time and resources to tow the car away. Additionally, more resources will be expended in tracking down the owner, who will then be liable for punitive measures. Meanwhile, the abandoned car in question will be taking up vital parking space that could be used for responsible drivers, as well as creating an unsightly eyesore in the urban landscape. Moreover, vermin and critters like raccoons, rats, and even cockroaches can infest an abandoned car, creating, at best, a pest-control nuisance and at worst, a potential public health hazard. In terms of space, habitat, and health hazard, the safety dangers of abandoned junk cars are obvious and should be avoided.

The Illicit Safety Dangers Of Abandoned Junk Cars

Aside from taking up space unnecessarily, it may surprise some to learn that abandoned cars are also hotspots for crime. Abandoned cars are frequently utilized as meeting places to engage in drug deals, as well as the dropping off and picking up of other illegal substances like firearms and other types of weapons. Unfortunately, abandoned cars are also places where prostitution is practiced. The safety dangers of abandoned junk cars are not just evident through these crimes in and of themselves, but in the fact that they attract nefarious and unsavory characters into otherwise safe neighborhoods and commercial and industrial areas.

Finally, abandoned cars also attract vagrants who turn the vehicles into makeshift homes. Doing so can keep these people exposed to the elements, which can exacerbate pre-existing and adverse health conditions and possibly lead to death. Further, using a car as a home can also keep drifters from seeking out food and medical attention offered by proper homeless shelters.

Environmental Hazards

An automobile is also a storehouse of hazardous and potentially harmful liquids and chemicals. Without the proper removal and recycling of things like gasoline, oil, lubricants, and washer fluid, the immediate environment around an abandoned car is at risk of contamination. This is especially true if any of these liquids reach a water supply, which could result in the sickness, degradation, and destruction of plant, animal, and human life.
